Recently we were turned on to an up and coming shoe company called Nisolo. After hearing countless rants and raves about the unique products they produce we decided to try them out for ourselves.. and we were very impressed.
The shoes themselves are beautiful and well made. Right out of the box, the level of craftsmanship and high quality of materials is blatant. Unlike other Chukka brands, (and we know, there are tons) the Nisolo offers a handmade product for the price of your run-of-the-mill entry level boot. How do they manage that? Well, after developing a relationship with the local artisans of Trujillo, Puru, a region known for is talented shoemakers, the company's founders realized that one of the biggest problems facing these third world craft masters was their inability to gain access to the global market. With the revitalization of the local shoe industry Nisolo has been able to provide constant employment and an average income increase of 300% per producer providing improved living conditions and bringing dignity and empowerment to the people of Trujillo.
"Nisolo means not alone. As consumers, we are not alone in the world. We recognize that our small choices have a big impact somewhere else. As producers, we are not alone. We have access to the global market and fair compensation for our work. We are a team of makers, doers, and storytellers working together to facilitate a healthy connection between consumers and producers in the global marketplace."
With these ideas in place, Nisolo has become a leader in brand transparency enabling consumers to know exactly where every good is made and all details of production and generating awareness in how our purchases effect the rest of the world.
What makes this especially fun for us (besides the awesome shoes) is that the co-founder of Nisolo is a Santa Barbara native. Zoe Cleary was born and raised in this beautiful town that we call home and although the company has its headquarters in Nashville, TN and Trujillo, Peru it is nice to know that this small California beach town is still cultivating free-thinking, business oriented young professionals that work toward making this global marketplace a fair environment for everyone involved.

The specific style we tested were the men's Chavito Chukka Boot in the Steel color option and man, they look good.
